i have a 2001 Ford Laser, every now and then it runs on 2 cylinders (engine shakes and rattles, no power and won't idle well). This problem doesn't happen all the time and if I turn it off and leave it sit for 5 mins or so it generally runs better. This problem can happen as I drive along or when I try to start the car. I have spent over $500.00 to fix it and nothing has helped. I have had a tune up so plugs and leads were replaced (mind you the problem appeared after this was done). I have also had a new fuel filter fitted and one mechanic charged $120.00 to place a piece of tie wire around the top of one of the coil leads claiming it was loose! It doesn't appear to be a fuel starvation issue as I can smell unburnt petrol when I turn the engine off. It was suggested that one of the coils could be dodgy so next time it started to 'play' up I turned it off unplugged one coil lead and tried to start the engine in an effort to maybe narrow the problem down to one of the coils, however the engine did start, so i tried the opposite coil and once again the engine started running on the 2 cylinders it was running on before. There are no engine warning lights that come on when this problem occurs. Most mechanics tell me they can't diagnose the problem until it "plays up", which of course I cant predict. I hope you can help me as I am now broke and at a loose end to what the problem isand how to fix it. Thank you.

Well that statement about checking out a car is generally true.....The problem does have to be happening at the time or it is very hard to find....For the simple reason that the engine is running fine so any test that is run at that time will have passing results...
If this was a problem if front of me....The 1st thing I would do would be to put in a different set of plugs and if they weren't Motorcraft, then go with Motorcraft...(OE for here in the states)......It could be something as simple as a bad plug.....
With Fords once you clear the codes & turn off the light, it takes some of them a while before they will set a code again for a misfire....They can have a dead miss and the light won't go on....I won't bore you with all the details but it's basically relearning the crank profile and on some that can take a while & until it's relearned, a misfire won't turn on the light......There are other ways to find the misfire but you need to be familar with the system and have the proper tools...
If you aren't doing this yourself, I would suggest going back to the 1st place and see if they will warranty another set of plug....If that doesn't work, then I would find a shop that is familar with working on Fords and Mode $06......If they don't know what Mode $06 is....then they won't be able to find the miss until the crank profile is relearned...
