2001 LDV loses power

Hey all,
Recently bought a 2001 (i think, the number plate starts BX) LDV convoy hi-top (converted into a camper), and on the way back from our maiden trip, it started losing power and the exhaust kicked out lots of white smoke followed by black, then lost power completely. After a little rest, I managed to get it to safety, with same problem but I didn't want to drive it much further in case i damaged it more. Could I get it home (3 miles) with intermittent breaks without further damage? Does anyone know what this problem is likely to be?

We don't have that vehicle here in the states, so you might not get very many replies.
