2001
Voltswagon
Jetta GLS 5 Speed
2.0
86,xxx

I recently bought a used 2001 VW Jetta GLS 4 Door Sedan. It has 86,xxx miles on it. I had to replace the coolant housing since it had a crack in it. After starting it, I noticed it had a loud clapping sound. I was thinking maybe it was the timing belt since jetta are known for them getting off after so many miles. But I also thought that maybe the engine has over heated and I wasnt told about it. Which leads to this other issue. When I run the engine up to 1700 rpm, the oil light comes on and starts beeping. I looked at the oil stick and shows there might be 2 to 3 qt too much oil in it. I also think if the engine has over heated, it has ruined some of the seals causing oil to leak.

So I am wondering what I should do. Should I try to get it repaired or do it myself or should I just to the junk yard to get a motor to replace it.

Sounds like it might be a failed oil pump, hard to say. I wouldn't keep running it untill you find the problem. Might be worth the money to have it towed and diaged properly.
