Hi,

I'm stationed in germany and I have a 2001 Honda Civic HX with a CVT transmission with 65,000 miles. On saturday i was on the freeway doing about 80 mph, when all of a sudden the speedometer was going back in forth and the car was jerking real bad. I pulled over and pop the hood and all this white smoke was coming out from the engine. When the smoke cleared there was all this black oil all over my engine. I waited a couple of minutes and the car started fine, so i drove it to a Honda dealership and they kept it for a day. When i went to pick it up the mechanic said that the transmission needs 3 litters of oil and it had 4, thats why it splattered all over the engine. They flushed it and told me it should me fine. While i was driving back from picking up my car i was speeding up to pass a semi when my check engine light came on and it started jerking real bad again, I pulled over and this time there was no smoke nor was there any oil splattered on my engine. I started up just fine and i drove between 50 and 60 mph the rest of the way home and i didn't give me any problems at those speeds. I drove it to another honda dealership and said they didn't see anything wrong with it. They rest my check engine light again and told me to drive it on the freeway again and if it didn't again to bring it in and they will see whats the problem. I did just that and i was driving around 70 mph and the car didn't do anything. I still think something is wrong with my transmission. What do you think the problem is?? Thank you
willie

Hi Willie,

You may be right (thinking something is still up with the tranny) I'm curious how experienced these Honda shops that you went to are with the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). And how does a transmission get to be 3 liters of fluid low, without a leak or some form of trouble.

I will look for some more information on why this may be happening, you may want to try and call Honda's main tech line and see if they know of anything.

I’m having the same problem with my 2001 Honda Civic. It seems to happen after the engine has cooled down especially when it’s humid. I’ll drive the car to the store go shopping and when I return I start it up and it’s fine for a minute but then the car sputters and almost stalls. It does this about 3 times and then the car is fine. The dealer can’t seem to find the problem. It’s random so they can’t reproduce it.

Let me know if you find anything.
Thanks
