Please help, i have a 2000 jetta, 2.0 with 5 speed, i have replaced starter, battery and now timing belt but engine still wont crank. when I hit starter all I get is a click. Could this indicate bent valves and motor is siezed up?

Was timing belt broken and are you sure it's on exactly right? Many engines are "interference" and valves would hit top of pistons and not turn easily and result in damage. It this stuff is all on target the single click is usually a battery cable issue at any end, battery or the opposite ends. One powerful click suggest a stuck engine. Hope it's just cables and not the valves hitting. Even a starter motor is strong enough to cause issues/damage! T

This no start chart has helped me out a few times (scroll down past the advertisements to see it) See chart here. I hope it can help you and others of the forum as well. (link removed - not allowed)

Yes, the timing belt had a few teeth stripped of. When I was trying to replace it, the crankshaft pully did not want to rotate to line up the mark for TDC. That's why i'm wondering if the valves could be bent. (the camshaft would turn though)

Took a peek at parts for this. The most popular of two 2.0 engines is interference didn't check the other. Engine code "C" was one, code "A" the other 2.0. By what this sounds like damage has occurred. Duralast Dayco / Timing Belt Part Number: 95296 Price: $25.99 Notes: Water pump driven by timing belt Interference engine application ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Did it quit running because of this or was this just a routine replacement of the belt? All the 2.0s are interference engines. The only VW engines that are not interference engines are the 2.1 and 2.2 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I know this is late, but....I had a similiar problem had a mechanic work on all the ground connections as did I. He checked the start relay also, then told me to let him know if somewhere else solved the problem because he had done all he could. This problem kept coming and going till we did all of the above. Well, he must have got it right, because it never happened again.
