I have a 2000 ford focus wagon that started having problems. The problem is that one day we went out to start the car and i started with a funny noise. It was like a knocking sound at the front of the car. We have tried starting it since then and now it just clicks when you try to start it. Does anyone know what it might be? We called a mechanic and he says that he didn't think it was the timing belt but some rod on the car. Could it be that or something else?

To clarify - did it make a funny noise and still start the first time you noticed this? Did the noise continue with it running?

Right now the "clicking" suggests a low battery condition if repeating clicks. Single click when trying suggests a bad connection at battery or anywhere along the connections of the battery cables,
