2000 ford E250 temp gauge

Driving along in my 2000 ford E250 5.4 l v8 when all of a sudden temp gauge pins on hot oil light comes on van loses power, but continues to run. I pull over shut it off restart (sometimes 2-3 times) and all is normal. What could cause this to happen?

Temp shows hot and oil warning? Have you even checked levels of coolant and oil yet? Still driving or trying is just going to make this kill itself and it seems to be warning you,

What is "hot oil" light on this meant for? Transmission something?
Need codes read if fluids are really fine. The temp suddenly spiking up and loss of power something is really happening not just an error in the gauge IMO so needs attention right away starting with a code reading - and don't force this to run if not right as it will just make things worse,

I think there was supposed to be a comma there Tom. (gauge pins on hot, oil light comes on) I think....

Probably a faulty CHT sensor.

I've had my mechanic take a look at it twice. But every time I get it in there its not doing it anymore. The reader shows that it overheated. He said I might be the temp sensor. But can't be sure unless he can get the reader on when its doing its thing.

Maybe try this: Put a thermo in floor heater outlet and set heat to warmest. Once warmed up it should stay about the same. If it fluctuated or goes cold at the time gauge says "hot" it really is hot IMO. Boiling means vapor which doesn't transfer heat and messes with sensors.
Just do anything not to overheat or run on low oil pressure whatever this intermittent thing is it's worth paying strict attention to,

Have your mechanic monitor the CHT temperature sensor on his/her scan tool. See if wiggling the CHT electrical connector/harness or tapping on the sensor with a screw driver gets it to act up. The CHT is located on the left hand cylinder head. You don't have to drain the coolant to change it.
If the sensor shows the head temperature getting above 260F, the PCM will go into overheat protection mode. It will cause the temp gauge to peg, hot lights come on, and fuel injectors to be cut off. If it shows 330F or more, the PCM will disable all the injectors and the engine won't start.

It did it again this morning. It turns out that even though the hoses and radiator did not feel hot to the touch the anti freeze level was down by half 2.5 gal . The radiator is new 3 months old and there is no visible signs of a leak anywhere. Also no water on the dipstick. Will have to monitor it and search for some kind of leak.

Have the coolant system pressure tested when the engine is cold, you'll find the leak. I'm surprised your mechanic never thought to inspect the coolant level...hmmm
