I'm having problems with my 2000 Chevy Cavalier. It's a 2.4L, has 130,000 on it. Started giving me a code for low reading on o2 sensor about four months ago, but thought this was because i had a small crack in the flex pipe by the manifold. drove to the store the other day, ran fine on the way there, but when i started it up when i left the store it was running like an old tractor. Got home and assumed it was an exhaust issue so looked at the exhaust and had a section of exhaust glowing orange. Was section of pipe between cat and resonator. so i cut the exhaust off and found a chunk of the cat wedged up against the o2 sensor. So being the nice backyard mechanic that i am, i drove a pipe through the cat and welded back together. I still have a crack 3/4 or the way around the piece of flex pipe. the car was still running poorly so I checked the plugs and replaced. the plugs looked worn, but couldn't see any dramatic damage. After replacing plugs I drove the car to work and back, about 24 miles and consumed a quarter tank of gas and have no power. Could the exhaust leak be causing this or have I burnt a valve or blown a gasket. I haven't seen any trace of antifreeze in the oil. I understand that what i have done is illegal, just needed a bandage until i can replace the cat. just need to know how much damage the clog caused to the engine.
