I am having issues with the car bucking/surging especially when the engine is cold. It will also cut out and not want to respond when in low speeds/gears. On the highway you can feel a surge sometimes and it cuts out sometimes. I have covered the basics. It has a new fuel filter, air, oil, and plugs. We also had trouble starting it intermittently. I put a new Mass Air Flow Sensor in it as that was the one consistent thing showing up in the codes. Check engine light is almost always on and the EPC light flashes periodically. Basic scanners cannot seem to locate the trouble and I am trying to avoid going to a dealer. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I am at a complete loss and this seems to be a common problem according to other VW owners.

Thanks in advance.

CEL is on so find a place that can read what it has to say or this is going to be just throwing parts at it. Let it run lousy too long and you'll trash the convert(s) or more. Need the codes,
