2000 Peugeot 306 Poor Acceleration and Pulsing Revs Sign In

I have a 2000 Peugeot 306 LX 1.4L and have had this problem since i brought the car several months ago. At low speeds the car works fine, however once i get to above around 40mph, whenever i try to accelerate i seem to get very little power and the rev counter repeatedly goes from hi (6000RPM) to low (4000RPM) as if i was revving the engine. After a short while (around 20 - 30 seconds) the rev counter seems to settle and the car will begin to accelerate. I have not tried to resolve this problem yet, as i am unsure what could be causing it. I would be very grateful of any advice you could give, if you need more information please ask.

Manual shift - right? If engine speed (rpm - rev counter) goes up and you don't go faster along with it the clutch is probably slipping. Make sure you have some freeplay at top of clutch pedal if adjustable at all and expect to need a clutch replacement job soon if what I'm thinking is happening,
