2000 Peugeot 306 1.4 petrol wont start

Hi, can any one help with my problem. My dad has just replaced the engine in my daughters peugeot 306, after completion we tried to start the engine but unable to. Whilst looking to locate the problem we have noticed that we have no spark at the spark plugs and the fuel pump seems to have stoped working so no petrol coming through,, haveing previously been fine. We are at a loose end as to what the problem could be now and wondered if anyone had any ideas what to try next, any help would be very grateful, thanks
