2000 Mercury Sable

Out of the blue this vehicle started running very rough spitting and sputtering...engine light was pulsing. Immediately got the vehicle home as I hadn't gotten far before the trouble started. It started today fine and seemed normal idling in the driveway and didn't act up. Engine light remains on as it has for about 2 years with no real trouble. Took car out about same distance and the vehicle ran very well loaded engine with ac then off, then heater and off. I am puzzled by the effect and would like to know where to start so that this doesn't happen when I need to travel at a farther distance. Could this problem be vac system related? Was gonna check all the lines to check for splits disconnect etc. Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You should scan the engine controller to see what trouble codes are stored. Obviously you had misfiring going on for some reason. Write down the codes numbers and post them in here.
