Greetings all, 2000 Sable's engine shakes (3.0 V6 DOHC). Mechanic says its a dead cylinder and the engine is shot. I was just wondering what the difference is between the shaking thats caused by a bad motor mount (like my car) the shaking caused by a bad harmonic balancer (friends car) and shaking caused by a dead cylinder. Is there an easy way to tell, or is this something you need 10 years of experience for? Thanks for any help.....

A compression test should reveal the extent and what is wrong with ONE cylinder. Diagnose this (should have already been done) before swapping out the whole engine you asked about it another thread, T

zmaster; There are a 'multitude' of reasons that the cylinder could be misfiring. Too much fuel, or not enough (injector, vacuum leak, ect.) I'd recommend getting a second opinion. On these engines, it is very common for an injector to become plugged. I'd want to see what the HC readings are. If low, that means that the cylinder is not getting fuel. If high, could mean a valve, vacuum leak, or faulty injector. More diagnosis is needed. Loren SW Washington
