Woman Needs Help - Car has 43,000 miles

Hi Everyone,
On March 4, 2007 and March 8, my car would not restart after being turned off for 5-10 minutes. After waiting about 5 minutes, it restarted. I took the car into my mechanic on March 12 and had the fuel filter replaced and the fuel injectors cleaned (he didn't think that was the problem but we gave it a try). The diagnostics didn't show anything.

On March 29, I had the same problem and this time the car would not start - even after waiting. I had the car towed to my mechanic. When the car was taken off the tow truck it started right up. My mechanic ran the diagnostics and just once a code showed indicating that it was the Mass Air Flow Sensor. We replaced the sensor hoping this would resolve my issue. However, we cannot reproduce the problem in the shop so he cannot get a true diagnostic reading.

Yesterday, May 19 - 7 weeks later - (4th time in 10 weeks) the problem occurred again. I waited a few minutes and the car started right up.

The problem never happens in the morning when starting the car for the first time, but usually happens after the car has only been turned off for 5-10 minutes, but doesn't happen every time the car is off for 5-10 minutes.

1. Car starts.
2. Runs with my foot on the gas pedal.
3. Take foot off gas - will not idle - stalls.
4. No warning lights come on - no indication there is a problem.
5. Sometimes after waiting 5-10 minutes. the car restarts.

I travel about 50 miles round trip to work each day and this is going to drive me crazy. Any help that can be provided would be greatly appreciated..

Sis

If it runs with your foot on the gas pedal and dies when released, I would look at the idle speed circuit. There is an Idle Speed Control solenoid/motor somewhere on the car. It may also just be dirty. The Idle Speed Motor will not set a code unless it is shorted or open inside the solenoid. Just a place to look from your description. Keep us informed.

Dear Way2Old (what a great name)

Thank you so very much for your response. I am very meticulous about my vehicle - one of those individuals who change the oil every 3,000 miles, rotate the tires as needed, just visit my mechanic to have him check things for the fun of it. I've known him for 15 years, so he knows how I am.

If we could only reproduce the problem in the shop...

Is the Idle Speed Control solenoid/motor something I should ask my mechanic to check/clean or is it something that should be done "when" the problems happens again?

I appreciate you taking the time to respond for someone you don't know.

I would suggest that he check it anyway, He may have already checked it also. You may also see if he has cleaned the throttle body also. These may be things that he has completed before, but we need to know. Thank you for the comment on the user name.Blush Everyone on this forum does this because we like to help people. Maybe someday yopu can buy me a beverage of choice.Wink Thanks for using our forum. If you get the problem repaired, please post the fix back here. That is our pay to know what has repaired the problem.

Dear Way...

I will have my mechanic check EVERYTHING... He has known for years how I am about my car - just a bit crazy!
He is also at his witts end because we can't duplicate the problem in the shop and he doesn't want to just start fixing things that don't need to be fixed. After the car was towed in, I left it there for 3-4 days just to see if he could get anything to happen. He drove it around, let it run in the shop, etc... - that's when he replaced the Mass Air Flow Sensor.

It's nuts, because it's like waiting for the next shoe to drop...

Look, I appreciate the fact that the forum even exists. And it's really nice to know that people still like to help people.

If we (that's the royal we) find the solution, I will definitely let you know.

Regarding the beverage of choice... no problem... anytime!
Angelic
