I just finished replacing a leaking head gasket, valve job, head resurface, crack check, timing belt, idler and water pump. All is well except a bad rattling noise is coming from the engine when it is decelerating. If you rev the engine up and suddenly take your foot off the pedal it sounds like a heat shield rattling or pre-detonation or a big loose timing chain rattling or (please no) loose rod bearings. Any thoughts or ideas. This is my daughters car and she did not tell me of the noise prior to my doing the other work and I never heard it although I did not drive it very much. Thought for the day...No good deed ever goes unpunished.

1st thing that needs to be done is the noise localized. Can you get it to happen in neutral? If so grab a 3ft extension or a stick or any thing something solid & narrow and start putting on different areas and listening at the other end while the noise is happening so you can pinpoint the area it's coming from. If the noise seems to be coming from the frt of the motor, take all the belts off and run it to see if the noise disappears........ Let us know how you make out...............
