Hello, I am a college student with a "new" car. This is my first vehicle. I have a 2000 Ford Focus SE. The body has 139,000 and the engine has roughly 95,000. Last Thursday, I started up my car and after it was started it started making a loud rattling or knocking sound which could be heard for quite the distance. It didn't have any troubles starting, stopping, turning, or accelerating. I had driven it about 6 blocks roundtrip with this noise. I was going to have a friend look at it in his garage but when i got it in drive and out of my parking spot, the car just died. No other noises except for the same noise that i had already had and no lights lit up signaling a problem. When i tried to restart it, it would just crank but not turn over. A mechanic friend thinks it is the timing belt. I have tried researching online and have seen a few saying that it is a dropped valve seat. I currently have it in a shop waiting to get it looked at. Any ideas so i dont get scammed into replacing something that doesn't need replaced

Well I guess if you feel all technicians are scammers the best idea would be to learn how to do it yourself so you don't have to deal with those crooks........

its not that i think they are crooks it is that some mechanics will take advantage of you and your situation if you let them. And I want to be knowledgeable so that it doesn't happen to me.
