I have a 2000 Ford Explorer XLT 4wd 4.0L SOCH 6cyl and Thursday it began overheating. My husband changed the thermostat and it didn't overheat for a day and we took it in to a mechanic the day after for an unrelated issue and the mechanic said there was a leak from the thermostat housing and he would have to charge us $300 extra to fix it. My husband checked it himself and everything under the hood is bone dry and no leaks are present. The coolant that we've added hasn't left the clear/white tank (unsure of correct term), isn't making it to radiator and the mechanic added coolant directly to radiator which worked for a little while but it did overheat about two hours later. Unsure of what to look for and why coolant isn't making it to radiator. Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!

Thread moved so just leave it.
Again here playing "phone tag" with one person at the job and another on the web - makes for confusion on who has done what and how for what exact reasons.

Overheated first and apparently not well diagnosed or maybe it was thought to be a thermostat which didn't work out or known filled properly.

It's leaking was said but unseen.

Reduced to Wild Arse Guessing again. If thermostat housing and job went wrong, broke housing, thermostats some can go in upside down and looking at a recovery tank is useless just now. It does need to have a leak free small hose to radiator but not they way you fill a system first and said it was filled at the radiator but not done with just that yet or even on easy ones needs a few cycles to purge air out if it can.
Not sure how anyone is tossing prices at you yet for any fix as the original problem wasn't really known yet.
Coolant not moving can be assorted reasons that include thermostat but also, installation problem, radiator plugged up badly, water pump impellers rotted too much and a list of checks. BTW - few overheating issues really are a bad thermostat but is so common to blame them first.
Just plain water ever used in this engine? That would cause a host of problems.

Inadequate info so far,

T

You sure that plastic thermostat housing assembly isn't leaking? Our shop has replaced quite a few of them. Maybe you should have the coolant system pressure checked to see if there are any leaks when the engine is cold. If there is a leak, the coolant system may suck in air from the leak when the engine cools instead of the reservoir. Also if the reservoir is full of gunk at the bottom, the hose might be plugged up. What was the condition of the coolant in the system before your husband had worked on it?

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
