2000 Chevrolet Malibu V6 80K miles

There is a loud tapping from the engine that speeds up with engine acceleration. Stick Valve? Bad Lifters? Rod? Can a fuel injector make this noise (that's where I hear it with Stethoscope).

Car runs GREAT! Has much POWER! Idles GREAT.

I don't want to put much money into this car so am trying to pinpoint the problem before I begin replacing parts...

Can anyone help?Mad

With out hearing the noise it's hard to guess..... All the things you mentioned could cause the problem. If you can't pinpoint it for sure it might not be a bad idea to pay a few bucks to have a trained ear take a quick listen..... Could winded up being cheaper in the long run

Hey...thanks for your reply! I appreciate it.

So, can a Fuel Injector make that much noise? Sounds like two ball peen hammers tapping and you can hear it over the motor...when I use the stethoscope, I hear the sound loud and clear on the fuel rail...more so then on that part of the engine.

I agree with you on the taking it for a diagnosis...and will follow that advice if I don't hear anything concrete...

Thanks again...let me know your thoughts about the fuel injector. Darn car runs terrific and has great power.

While injectors can make a loud tapping noise, it's unlikely this is the noise you are hearing....

More than likely it's a lifter or rocker arm problem............
