Hi all, I own a 2000 Chev Malibu (V6) currently has just over 100k Miles. Hardly ever had any problem with it.. Until last night

I was driving, and suddenly, I noticed the engine noise was a little louder than usual, When I'm at a stop, the I can feel the a lot of traction on the wheels.
The car used to idle at about 500 RPM, now it does close to 2000 RPM. Of course, increased gasoline usage comes alongsides with this...

Any one have any idea what I could check ... My gess is that some sensor must have went out... but wouln't know which one... or where it's located.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated...
Thanks

Moe there are so many things that might be causing this that we would need you to get under the hood and begin your own checks of things. Looking for cracked/disconnected vacuum lines; bare/burnt or shorted wiring. As for the sensors you would need to have the computer scanned; first off for codes and then too have a look at sensor data; in the hope of getting a lead as to which direction to go in.
Sorry sometimes there are no easy answers; I’m not saying that this is going to be a hard fix but it may take an experienced tech and his equipment to find the root problem.

I understand... it's strange though, because it doesn't happen all the time.. just out of the blues... The "check engine" light has not came on, hence my next question.

Is it still a good idea to get it scanned if the engine light is not on?... does that matter at all?

You won’t know until the vehicle has been scanned; there might be pending codes. Not all codes will set the check engine light the first time the computer sees a fault. The computer has to see the same fault for example, in two consecutive drive cycles then the computer will turn on the light. But if there’s an intermittent fault that only occurs once every 5th, 6th cycle the computer will store the code and wait for it to happen again before it takes any action as in an adjustment or turning on the check light. Also codes are only a device to tell a technician what circuit has the potential problem. Even without codes being found an experienced technician will look at scan data and sensor inputs, looking for unusual readings. Possibly a sensor that is fixed at the far end of its range but still within; which would answer why the computer hasn’t set the light?
