hello, this is my first post, i hope this is a friendly and informative site. i just bought a 1999 chevy suburban, 5.7 lt. 4wd, is has a lower end engine knock, the guy i bought it from said it was ticking first, then started knocking in his drive way, he shut it down immediately and has been parked for 1 1/2 years since, he is a boss of mine and i really trust what he is telling me. anyway, i am pulling the pan to see what i can find, can i do this without raising the motor, looks like i can. if not, what do i need to do. and what can i look for, i know to look for a broken rod or play in a rod bearing, what else is there than i can look for. thank you for taking the time to read this and i hope you can help me.

Did you or anyone take note of oil pressure? After a year and a half testing parts and diagnosis will be difficult at best.
If it had adequate oil pressure it would help to know to check other than rod bearings OR check them if safe to run is simpler if it's adequate to run the engine - tough call at the time it's been down,

yes, i here what you are saying, oil pressure was good at start up, but didn't want to run it too long, in fear of doing more damage. i have checked the flywheel, it is good, i have the pan all unbolted, waiting to borrow an engine hosit so i can jack up the motor to get the clearance i need to pul the pan out from under it. if it is a busted rod, can i change that from under the truck without pulling the motor?

no,it has just been changed before they shut it down, and it is still clean and free of particals. just picked up the engine hoist, getting ready to raise the engine to get the pan off, will let you know what i find.

it is 4 wd so now i have to pull the motor completely out to get the pan off, will get back to you when i find the problem, thanks.

Bruce; I'm pretty sure they still sell it, Plastiguage. You put a little bit in the rod and main journals, retorque the caps, remove and 'read' the thickness of the plastiguage. Tells you how much clearance you have in the bearings. Also, take a very close look at the flex plate. The like to crack right around the hub and bolt holes. Nearly impossible to see without pulling the trans or the engine. Will cause a hell of a noise and sometimes a vibration.

hello, thanks for the input, i already took a look at the flexplate, but like you said, its hard to tell until i get the motor out, i will know that for sure when i unbolt it and pull it down. yea i kow about the journal clearnace, i will check the rod and main bearings when i get to that point. thanks again, Bruce

Bruce. If you drop the front differental the oil pan can be removed. Lot easier than pulling the motor.

yes, but i figure, the motor is coming out anyway.i really need to check everything, i have come this far, why stop now, i want this vehicle very sound when i put it on the road, i wil be using it to pull my camper and horse trailer, i don't want to be stranded anywhere, so i already had plans to pull the motor and go through it.

ok, got the motor out, can't see any broken rods, must be a spun bearing, bought me a new used motor to put in it. i plan to rebuid this old motor, is it worth it.

Of interest now: What would you do now with two engines for this? If you can clearly find what caused the knock and that did only limited damage it might be worth fixing up to sell it. If the old engine needs everything it'll cost a fortune and still just be a rebuilt vs orig motor - never as good as an orig IMO,

yes, you are right, i will look to see what the damage is first, i may find out what damage is done and try to sell it as a possible rebuilder and list what i found wrong with it. it is a 4 bolt main motor and i know alot of people like thse motors. thanks tom
