1999 Toyota Corolla engine dies when accelerator pressed Sign In

I started my car and there was a loud POP. When I pressed the accelerator the engine died. It starts fine and runs okay in Park, but dies every time I press the accelerator. I'd like to try to fix it myself (I'm broke). Any ideas about what it might be?

Year of vehicle: 1999
Make of vehicle: Toyota
Model of vehicle: Corolla CE
Engine size: 1.8L 4-cylinder
Mileage: 140,000+ miles

Do you have access to a compression tester or anything? I take the word broke for what it means = no money at all. What can you do for nothing? Not much even by yourself with all the tools and know how there is so what is plan "B" for you? Need help as my guess is valve timing would be on my first check list.

If compression is very low evenly that would be a clue and high bet it somehow failed with the timing chain not rubber belt listed for this.

Should look like this........

IDK - if compression is low I'd be at least checking if this chain shown has any real deflection noted and not run it again if you find it loose or risk destruction of the motor IMO at the age possibly not worth fixing if allowed to crunch valves which most would do but hasn't yet probably? Can't know without checking.
Can you see anything obviously wrong just looking around and perhaps some issue at the throttle body?
It's probably best you fix your financial situation as anything suggested that isn't obvious to the eye is going to cost something and if no funds available leave it alone till you can find some means to do something,

You need to start out by scanning the computer for codes. They could be very helpful in getting pointed in the right direction.

I think my car is too old for computer codes.

What? Your car is a 99. Cars have had the ability to store codes since the mid 80s.

And yes, broke = no money. Timing chain has been suggested by others, so I'm taking public transit and counting my pennies, thanks.

Oh, where do they store them?

The local auto parts store will scan them for free.

Hmm, okay, that's good to know, have to think about how I can use that. Thanks.

What is there to think about? You plug a code reader into the diagnostic connector and push read codes.

Re: 1999 Toyota Corolla engine dies when accelerator pressed Sign In

Well, I was thinking about how to get my non-running car to an auto parts store. Maybe get a friend to tow it with a rope at night, then pop in and ask for a computer check in the morning, as if I just drove it there....

Or you could just buy an inexpensive code reader. If you expect to do your own repairs, you can't do them without one.

It could be cheaper to tow it over to your mechanic and have them check it out. The diagnostic time might be close to or as much as a code reader. Even with the code reader, it might not give you much to go on, but an experienced tech should have all the tools to figure out what is going on. If they figure it out, you can determine if it is something you can fix yourself.
