1999 Ranger trouble cranking when hot.

This has happened a few times to me. 1999 Ford Ranger XLT, 4.0L, 185,000 miles. After driving different distances and speeds, (local and highway), when I attempt to restart truck it acts like it is out of fuel or battery is dying and takes a few times to crank. Then it idles really low, under 500rpms, really rough and sometimes shuts off and have to go through it again. If I give it more gas it is okay and runs. This only happens when it is hot outside. Never happened in the winter. South Georgia temperature ranges. Happens when AC was run and when not run. I can let it sit for about a half hour then everything is fine. Sometimes I can go for weeks or months without this happening.

Some things to check for something like that: Is the temp gauge staying put once warmed up - it should without fluctuating. A "tight" engine from heat can do that with marginal battery power. Check battery connections - all ends of both sides positive and negative at battery, solenoid and engine ends too.
See how old battery is too just because. If over four years and you plan to keep this I'd get a new one. They are marked if you don't recall. Both hot and cold extremes are a strain on a battery,
