Is it possible to just clean a Mass Airflow Sensor or does it have to be replaced? I had the check Engine light come on yesterday about three hours after I had a brand new altenator put on. I took it to auto zone to have it diagnosed and the code was: P1131.

The guy told me that it was probably a: failed Mass airflow sensor.. I took a look under the hood and the part looks pretty gunked up.
: or a failed HO2S..... I don't even know what that is.

Can some one help...................

It is possible to clean the MAF. There is electrical contact cleaner that dries with no residue and works pertty good. If you are true with your next to last statement, I would take it to a shop. A little searching will lead you to instructions on how to clean the MAF. Good luck.

Being way2old is why I need help from younger minds

A P1131 is a heated oxygen sensor code ...

Several things can cause this.....if it happened right after some work was done, inspect the area ...possibly could even set there is a vacuum leak....
If you suspect a MAF....check for vacuum leaks around that area...I had a friend with a mazda..she had some work done and after that it would lose power on acceleration....close inspection noted the black air inlet duct from the MAF sensor to the throttle body was left loose and some bolts holding the MAF were left off....

This code means the computer is correcting "rich" for an overly "Lean " condition...
Heck, even check that the oil dipstick is seated correctly..
Look for exhaust leaks before or near the o2 sensor...

Just some thoughts....
