I bought a 1999 Kia Sportage that "was to thought to have a cracked head" The heads looked good but the head gasket was shot. I replaced it and set the timing according to Chilton DIY but I can not get it to start.

Tryed: I check and I do have spark and fuel pressure. I also tryed spraying starter fluid down the intake and it is burning it but wont even try to start. I get no codes when I hook up my computer but I went ahead and replaced the Crank position sensor just for trial and error. Nothing.
Also I poured oil in each spark plug hole because I wasnt getting compression, and the starter would barely turn it over, (it sat for some time with water on in the pistons) after I cleaned up the oil it turned over really good and gave me plenty of compression.

I dont know what else to try, in my thinking if you are getting fire and fuel it should start.

What are your compression numbers?
When you had the head off did you send it to a machine shop and have it checked out?

The compression was around 180 or so per cylinder. I dont remember for sure. No I didnt take the heads in, I was going to take a chance on them since visibly they looked ok,
Forgive me if I am wrong but even if the heads were out a little it should still crank, would it not?
