HI everybody..
I have a 1999 Ford Escort 2.0 SPI, automatic, with 88000 miles that dies out while driving on the highway 55/65 mph.
These new parts have been installed:
A new computer and 02 sensor were installed (Check engine light was on for 02 sensor heater PO135 - dealer said computer was bad. They changed the computer AND the 02 sensor.)
New plugs and wires
New battery
New fuel filter

This is what I have checked so far:
Computer shows no trouble or pending codes when I scanned it
Fuel pressure is 31 psi when running (book says 25-35 is normal)
After the car is shut off, it holds 32 psi on the fuel pressure gauge
I jiggled the keys in the ignition switch while the car was running to check if the switch was the problem.
When I got the car home and scanned it 5 monitors said "incl" like the drive cycle wasn't completed. The car had 2100 miles put on since the new computer was installed.

It starts fine and idles smooth. Revs with no stumble or hesitation
When I drive the car around town, it drives fine, acceleration is good, again no stumble or hesitation
On recent drives on the highway of 20 miles or so it did not die out, however my last drive of 45 or so miles, the car died out at 55/65 mph like the ignition switch was turned off. Just that quick. It again did not stumble or hesitate before it died. I put the car in neutral while coasting and it started right back up, put it in gear and it ran fine again..for about 5 minutes and died again. It always started right back up, but in a 45 mile trip it died about 20 times.
Has anyone ever had this happen to their car and PLEASE let me know what the problem was
THANKS in advance

Well the 1st thing you need to do if find out for sure what is missing...From what you've posted it really sounds like spark but it's best to be sure..............

Depending on what you find out would determine what you check next. If you don't have spark you would want to verify the crank & cam signals. The cam is more for the fuel injection and shouldn't be causing this problem while running but once again...better to be sure....

Both are pulse generators that produce an a/c sine wave....I'm really not sure of a good way to check them with out a scope, I'm guessing maybe you could use a dvom on the a/c scale and look for some kind of a varying reading while cranking but that is a total guess.

One thing to check would be the harnesses....As I mentioned both produce a/c signals so that means they are very susceptible to interference....The harnesses should be shielded but get one next to a leaky ign wire & all bets are off........

I know it's not much help but thats all I got at this point...........sry.....

Thanks for the quick response.
I was driving around town today and it died again. So now it doesn't only die on the highway. With any luck something will go out completely and maybe I can find the problem. These intermittent problems are a pain in the ass. I'll check the harnesses and rescan the car tomorrow.
Would the crank and/or cam sensor malfunction throw a code?

If I drive around with the scanner hooked up and view/record the live data, what info (on the scanner) would I look at to see if there is a non-spark condition? Well that is if the car dies at the right time.

Thanks again

Most of the time it will throw a no crank ref code, a P0320 but not always.........

If you have a scanner where you can view data, take a look at the RPM PID. When it dies and won't start. See if it shows RPMs while you crank the engine........No rpms & would be looking real good at the sensor & related wiring....

Now this is assuming you have a no spark condition and it's not a fuel problem....... Like I said before I would make sure before checking this or that..... Get a spark tester for spark and for fuel, you can spray some starting fluid or carb clean down the throttle body, if it starts, you have a fuel problem.......

I scanned the car today.... no codes or pendings, however it showed 5 monitors as incomplete again. I checked the wiring and harness connections on the crank sensor. They looked ok- no corrosion in the harness connector- no missing insulation on the wires. I put in a new crank sensor for the hell of it and cleaned the grounds on the battery/body and computer terminals. I'll see what happens.

I'm gonna carry my scanner with me in case she dies again.

Thank you again for your time and info.

Hey guys,
I thought that I would update the situation.....
I took off the computer wire harness and cleaned it with "electrical contact cleaner" and swabbed the pins on the computer itself with the cleaner on a Q-tip. I hooked the harness back up and snugged the bolt that holds the harness to the computer tightly and......the last 5 or so times that I drove the car, she DIDN'T die out. I also noticed that when it was idling and I turned on the air conditioner the idle speed increased a bit(like it should). I don't want to throw a whammy on myself by saying it's fixed, but it sure seems like it is.

Thanks again guys for your valuable time spent helping me out. Maybe this will help someone else that has the same problem in the future.

Thanks for the report. Can't argue with what works and seems like it did. One would hope connections and plugs throughout a car stay good forever but they don't - especially ones underside and some models have more troubles than others. Didn't know this one was prone more than any other,

I have a 1999 escort se with the 2.0. I have a crank - no start - no spark - situation. All fuses are good. I have fuel pressure at rail, but have not checked injector firing status YET. Have a donor car available that runs to swap parts with... I replaced the crankshaft position sensor with a NEW one. Coilpack with known working one. Camshaft position sensor with known working one. Control module with known working one. STILL NO SPARK!! Any educated guesses or tips would be much appreciated... Thanks

You need to do some more complete testing to see the whole picture.

These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.

2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

My son is having same issues with his 97 Ford Escort. Where is the harness located? Thanks!
