1998 contour won't read key to start Sign In

i was driving the other day and all of a sudden my car stopped running. we couldn't restart it so had it towed home. it's acting like it's not reading the key. the antitheft won't allow the car to start. it cranks but there is no power going to the fuelpump relay or the ignition. the anti theft light flashes rapidly when the key is in the on and running position after a minute or so the flashing stops and then the flashing starts again flashing in a number sequence that is the number 16 or 1-6. like its some kind of code. i tried replacing the key, along with the code reader and the PATS module from one out of the junk yard, but the results were the same.

Have you tried another key? Which "ignition switch" did you replace? Was it the key cylinder or the switch down on the column? If it was the key cylinder, try another key with the original one. Is the theft light flasjing?

We still need the trouble codes to diagnose. I can gues at the 16 or 1-6, but it does not show those in the manual. It will be something like B1600. If you can get theos codes and post them, we can find the problem. You may have created more problems by changing the parts from the junkyard. Not really sure but they all need to be programmed to the PCM.

after trying the parts from the junk yard, i put the original parts back in . the alleged code is coming from the flashing of the led of the anti theft light and not the engine diagnostic. i cant get a code from the engine without it running.

Autozone or Pep Boys have a loan a tool program. You leave a deposit ad they loan you the tool you need. Worth a shot. You get your money back when you return the tool.

i have the code reader but it doesn't read anything unless the engine is running. unless you know of some other way.

The code reader should read if the key is in the on position. The car should not have to be running. Do any lights come on the dash when the key is in the on or run position?
