I have a 1998 chevy malibu which died while i was driving it down the road,it made NO noises, the oil is full, nice & clean with no water or gas in it.The car has about 150K.I am believing the catlytic converter need sfixed because it seems to be clogged. The car has a slight "hum" to it near the rear of the car,but that hum has been there for years, ever since we had the car.The car will start now,but will shut off right away. One guy says the bearings went out, another says it may be a sensor. Please help.

Vegas Night here! That humm might have been the fuel pump and you can listen for it with the key turned to run without starting and it should shut off when pressure is achieved. If it can't keep up the car would shut down. See if that's the same sound you've been hearing but with engine off. That would be telling of a bad fuel pump sans further adieu, T

What is needed for diagnosis is if the fuel pressure and pump are ok. That's why I suggested listening for it which requires no tools - just ears and if that's a problem have a helper listen to it as suggested. There is no way for me to know for sure but you probably need a new fuel pump, T

Hi Tom,yes we can hear it when the car is trying to start,so we have been told by many around here that the fuel pump is ok.Do you have any idea what could be wrong with the car now,do you think it may be a bad crank shaft,or some sort of sensor maybe?I'm hoping it isn't the engine bearings.Thank you for helping me out here,I really appreciate it.

The hard mechanics of this should NOT be the problem. Bad bearings and so forth are a problem but the engine would run?? Crank sensor is possible. Keep in mind there's only so much you can do with a keyboard/computer. Not easy but fuel pressure is a key here and takes tools/equipment to check it, T
