I'm working on a 1998 volkswaken bettle with a 2.0L with 103K miles. The engine will idle fine after a brief warm-up, but will stumble and nearly die when the gas pedal is depressed. The engine runs fine when the fuel return line is pinched off with a pair of pliers, just after the regulator, leading me to believe there is a lean condition. The fuel pump, filter, and pressure regulator are all brand new. The pressure reading matches spec with no bleed off after ten minutes. I have misfire codes for cylinders 1, 2, and 3, as well as a random misfire code. There is also a downstream O2 sensor code. There is an exhaust leak before the catalytic converter. I have never seen an exhaust leak or bad O2 sensor cause an engine to run so poorly. If anyone has come across anything similar, or have any thoughts on the subject, any help would be much appreciated.

My first suspicions would be with the Mass Air Flow sensor. I'm not sure if VW will default if the sensor is unplugged but it may be worth a try.

I'll check the MAF sensor and see what happens. Another suspicion is the Throttle position sensor. Any thoughts?

The TPS is possible but not real likely. It would have to go completely open circuit and the computer would pick up on that.

Turned out to be the MAF sensor. It does go into default when unplugged. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
