1998 Sephia Timing belt broke did i damage my engine Sign In

The timing belt broke on my 1998 Kia Sephia 5 spd stick shift. Will this do major damage to the engine? The just quit on me the other day with no warning I was coming off the highway so i was slowing down. Everything checks out I'm getting gas and a spark to the plugs. The engine cranks but won't catch. I had a mechanic look at it.

Yes, I'm afraid that is an interference engine and if it broke while driving, then you have likely bent numerous valves when the piston hit them. You can verify this with a complete compression test if you are sure the belt is timed correctly.

UnimpressedBetter not do any more damage by doing compression test.because you allready know that when the belt broke the damage is done.bent vavlves back off on the camshaft bolts bring # 1 cyl to top daed center.remove head access damage.

No, i don't agree with that advice. If you haven't already changed the belt, then verify the belt is bad and replace it. then you can see what you have at that point and if it doesn't start, then do a compression test with the new belt on it. If it fails the compression test, then you'll have to tear it down. Depending what RPM it was when it broke or jumped, you could have lucked out with no damage.

Wink I think I would pull the plugs out and use my handy bore scope and look at the valve train inside the cylinders before I attempted the t-belt repair. But that is just me.

Great idea but most DIY'ers don't have the benefit of owning a boroscope.

We had to rebuild a kia four banger for a friend of ours after their timing belt went... We had to rebuild the head... You will probably have to too if it died while running...Allot of the time they will go as your trying to start them and sometimes your valves are saved, but not always...Chances are that because they are not a non-interference engine, your valves most likely took a pounding...You'll will probably need to get a rebuilt head and hope to god that your pistons didn't take much damage, or you will need pistons too...which cost allot and well, KIAs are not worth the money... So, ya my words of advice to you are, change the timing belts on your vehicles regularily to avoid this problem altogether... They should be change between every 80,000 - 100,000 kms.
