1998 Jeep Not running after overheating

My 1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport, 4.0 litre quit running after an overheating episode. It was pinging somewhat loudly and stopped running. I have been unable to get it to start since. I removed the valve cover and noticed that all of the rocker arms are in horizontal alignment. I figured that some should be offset in relation to the cam or piston placement, am I correct in this assumption?

This needs to be looked at from the beginning as any no-start is. First, check for spark presence and fuel pressure. If you have fuel pressure at spec and no spark, check injector pulse with a noid light. If you have spark, fuel pressure and injector pulse do a compression test to find out what if anything has been damaged. By overheating, do you mean it started to get up there and was immediately shut down or do you mean the gauge was pegged out but it was still run for a few more minutes?

I feel I pushed it, when the gauge pegged out at 260' I got it cooled down, per the gauge and continued on. It ran at approx. 230' the pinging got progressively worse and it stalled. I haven't been able to restart since. I do have spark, I do have fuel in the injector bar per tire like valve. I checked the timing by bringing the #6 cylinder to top dead center on compression stroke and the distributor is aligned appropriately. (I chose #6 for ease of access.) Also the motor seems to have a drag on it, it does not turn over as readily as previous.

You don't need to waste a lot of time checking spark and fuel. It's pretty obvious that you fried it. I don't know if I'd even try fixing this one. You likely have cylinder and piston damage in addition to the usual head damage.

It's going to be hard to tell just how much damage there is in the lower end because of the top end being so messed up. Normally a compression test could tell you a lot but the top end is too leaky. You may see visual damage to the cylinder walls when you pull the heads off.
