1998 Dodge Intrepid Misfire/stall Sign In

Hello,

I am a newbie here, and I have the following problem:

I have a 1998 Dodge Intrepid base with the notorious 2.7L engine. It has 45,500 original miles on it. I am the second owner of the car, I bought it from a friend who's elderly aunt who took immaculate care of the car. After she died, the car sat for about 10 months. Then I bought it. It did not have this problem before she died, but it has been doing it since I bought it.

The problem: When the car is cold started, the engine runs smooth at idle and through the normal rpm range (500-3000 rpm). As it warms up, it starts to miss-fire or stumble. This gets worse the warmer the engine gets. At idle, the miss/stumble is very random and the engine will occasionally stall. While driving the car, on launch from a light, the engine will stumble randomly as the rpms increase. Once the engine gets to 2000 rpm, the stumble are much worse and continue to get worse until 3500 rpm, when the engine smooths out. In the 2000 - 3500 area the tach needle bounces erratically.

I replaced the coils and the TPS, but that did not solve the problem. I am now noticing that as the engine decelerates back to idle the front of the engine has a loud rattle that dissipates as the rpms increase.

Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Dave

I am stumped and would appreciate any information or help you can provide.

It need to have the computer read and see if there are any trouble codes stored. Since the car set up so long there is also a chance the fuel could be bad...try some top notch fuel treatment and replace the fuel filter and see if that makes a difference.
