1997 mercury sable won't hold idle

Recently changed the spark plugs and the iac valve. 133,000 miles
cranks right up but won't hold idle and within 20 sec or so begins to smoke inside the engine as if it is overheating. It ran like new for a day or two right after I did the work but suddenly
started to idle badly.

So, where is the smoke coming from?

I am unable to keep the car running without keeping my foot on the accelerator. It appears to be coming just from the front of the car, between the engine and radiator.

Your just not giving us enough information to determine anything.
Have you checked for vacuum leaks? Is the smoke coming from an oil leak?

It was idling badly before but was not overheating. when replaced the iac valve the parts guy was not sure which iac valve to sell me even though I gave him all the info he ask for. Could it be the wrong part?

I Did the work, it ran great, the next morning It idled bad. The overheating smoke is a byproduct of erratic idle.

Sure it could. It could be damaged or installed wrong too.
