1997 bmw 318 IS coupe over heating	Sign In

1997 BMW 318 IS engine over heating. Machined head, new head gasket kit, new water pump, new radiator. Stop engine leak was found in radiator. Any reasons why car is still over heating? (besides get rid of car). Could engine block be plugged?

There are several types of stop leak. Some make a gel and some the saw dust idea. Some cars have some as factory fill. People tend to go nuts and if first one doesn't work try another and that can really plug things up.

I think an aggressive flush could get most of it out. You may need to get a flushing product to help. I would do all of it and backwards and forwards till clear. If stop leak was used for a head gasket it usually doesn't work. It can fix a very small leak in some cases but if anyone wants to try this just use half the amount and if that doesn't work fix the leak. I don't suggest using these things unless a car is a bit of a junker and you want to squeeze out some more time with it.

Certainly you must be sure the fan is working properly??

Thanks, the fan is working properly, we're flushing the system right now. Some material is coming out, hopefully this will fix the problem.
