1997 Oldsmobile Sillhouette 3.4 L 178,000 miles (head work 3 years ago) This is VERY strange to me. This van runs awesome for a while and then it randomly runs terrible with tinging and back-firing so bad that I can barely get it to accelerate at all. At this same time it also develops a quite loud ticking sound that resembles valve noises, yesterday there were two ticking noises, one higher pitched than the other. Today, no noises and runs great???? The only issue lately has been one of the heat gauge and anti-freeze leak somewhere. I thought it might need flushing and bleeding, so I did do that. Anyone who can help me solve this mystery?? Thanks! TJ

You say this still has a mystery antifreeze leak? You need to find that - pressure test, check other fluids, oil for mixing with antifreeze. Could be two part fix for this. The leak may be allowing overheat seen or unseen OR getting something wet that can't tolerate it. Noises could be heat, pulley or water pump or the engine parts but need to know where it leaks first, T
