I seem to be having a bit of an issue with the engine light on my 97 Mazda Protege. It would come on for about a week, then when I call the garage to make an appointment to get it checked out, the light would go out for about a week, so I call and cancel. This has happened 3 times already, and I'm looking like a nut case by calling and canceling all the time. What would cause an engine light to keep going on and off like this? I doubt it's something serious. THanks!

With the car having OBDII (on board diagnostics) system, a code will be or in theory should be stored in the computer’s history memory. Retrieving the code will give the technician an idea of where to start looking for this intermittent problem. Which may turn out to be a bad connection or a sensor that is starting to fail in whatever circuits the code directs the technician to. The code will not tell you exactly what’s wrong but give you a direction to look. Dan. Canadian "EH"
