I have a 1997 Mazada Protege LX. It is sucking oil through the air filter and stopping up the air filter and spraying oil all over the side of the motor. Anyone got a suggestion what to look for first? Smile

Check the PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve.
Remove the PCV valve from the engine's valve cover leaving hose attached. Start the engine and check for vacuum at the valve’s opening. If no vacuum is felt check for collapsed or plugged hose restricting vacuum, if hose is ok, replace valve.
But if the PCV circuit is ok then the problem could be excessive crankcase pressures. Due to combustion pressures getting past the pistons into the crankcase?
Which could be caused by worn, seized or broken piston rings; worn tapered cylinder walls; in other words overall engine wear which would mean reconditioning or replacing the engine.
One other thing that I can think of; restricted exhaust system? If exhaust can’t get out of the engine the excessive internal pressure could cause oil to blow up to the air cleaner. But restricted exhaust usually causes running issues (loss in or no power) which you didn’t mention.

I also own a 97 Protege lx and had problems with oil spitting all over the top of the motor. I tried a couple different things that didnt work but then the head gasket blew. Instead of replacing it I just went to the junk yard and bought an engine with 40000 miles on it for $400. Installation was the easiest i've ever done. I did it in my driveway in 1 day. Maybe you have a head gasket starting to blow compression back into crankcase like I did.
