1997 Ford Escort - Engine/Idle Problem? Sign In

Hi,

I have a 1997 Ford Escort, [2.0/4, 210000 km], that has been given trouble for the past couple of years. The situation is:

• it starts fine, but idle is a little high (1500 rpm)
• it drives fine on the main road, however trying to pick up speed is very hard and slow to do, especially on highways. It takes a long time for it to get up to 100 km/h
• when driving, and stopped at lights, or stopped anywhere, and my foot is on the brake, the idle drops and fluctuates up and down (below 1000-500 even), to the point where the car will stall/shut off
• when i put the car into park, the idle jumps back up for a bit

In order to make it driveable, when stopped with foot on brake, i have to give it soem gas to jump the idle back up. I have taken it to several repair shops to get it looks at. No one can seem to accurately diagnose it. I was told it was the following:

• exhaust = repaired it
• IAC valve = replaced it
• catalytic conv w/gsket = replaced
• all hoses/wires checked

I have even taken it to the Ford shop to be looked at with no luck. Hopefully an expert here may know what the problem is.

Thank you!
A frustrated Ford Escort owner

Thanks a bunch for posting the same thing five times all over the site! Good way to get booted off the site. You are down to just one post now - I took out the rest. See that you are new but how the heck are we to follow who said what for suggestions in five different places?

For now get and post code readings,

T

well if your fuel trim % are in the normal range on the scanner I would try cleaning throttle body and make sure the butterly valve is cleaned too and the hole in the valve.

Also do a compression test on the vechical #4 cylinder has been knowen to have issues with valve seats coming loose. You can get a compression tester through a borrow a tool program through most parts stores.

thats all I can think of off hand if you are %100 sure their are no vacumm leaks and IAC is working properly.

Strange even with a new IAC it's still doing it.
Maybe the throttle body just needs to be cleaned?
IAC or dirty throttle body was my first guesses too.
