1997 Dodge Intrepid engine noise HELPPPP	Sign In

I have a 1997 dodge intrepid that is making a whistling noise intermitently. The noise seems to be coming from the back of the engine. Thought maybe a vacuum leak?? But the car is running fine. Not missing, getting hot, smoking, or anything. Now my starter has gone out. It takes 1-several tries to start. When it does, it runs fine but still has the intermitent whistling. When you speed up the noise does also. Could it be the starter that has been making this noise since it is going out??? Maybe bearings in the starter (if it has them?). Would a starter make a noise like that??? Thanks for the help guys!!!

The starter only operates in the crank posotion. It has no play in the driveability of the vehicle. I noticed you said the whistling speeds up as the vehicle speeds up. Maybe we should check for air leaks around gaskets on body parts. If the noise only happens while moving we need to check for air entering the vehicle where we have gaskets and seals. I would check the windshield seal and possible door gaskets. You may even want to see if the rubber is cracked around the bolts that mount up the heater box. They protrude through the firewall and if air starts going by the seals it will become noticeable. Just a thought.
