1997 Chev, S10 Blazer. 4.3, V6 Vortec Oil pressure problem Sign In

1997 S10 Blazer, 4.3 Vortec. Check gauges indicator comes at times on when engine is at operating temp & oil pressure guage gets down in the red area but not zero. When engine is cold the oil pressure is over 40 psi. I have tried to locate the oil pressure sender but cant see it. I wanted to check that first. The car has 182K miles & runs great. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Switch should look like this......

I think it's located near distributor but maybe near an on engine oil filter? Some S-10s made a remote oil filter and doubt it's there. Look for it.

#1 is what oil viscosity and type are you using? Any sludge problems or suspect?

You should really check this with a gauge on engine to verify accuracy but tend to believe it's telling you the truth. It take a special socket to grab the funky hex of those. Not expensive but as said don't think that's the problem but testing still worth it.

If you think you are at the end of this vehicle or engine you could try upping the viscosity just one step and I'd use synthetic to see if it would help but gut feeling is engine is getting tired.

Higher pressure cold is normal,

T

Sorry for two posts on this. Switch is listed as located here.......................
The Oil Pressure Switch is located:
Under hood, center, rear engine area, above transmission bellhousing, mounted in engine block

When gauge drops, is there any engine noise (noisy valvetrain)? Youll want to put a manual gauge on it and verify the actual oil pressure. The oil pressure sender is near the distributor/drivers side valve cover on rear of engine.

Yes, this one is tucked away pretty good on the back of the engine. You may be able to feel it but I doubt you can see it.

Thank you very much. I will change oil & go to a 20-50. or 20-40. The engine still has plenty of power.

WHOOOO....................... nobody suggested to do that and in fact you can cause a lot of engine damage doing that. These engines are not engineered to use oil that heavy.

If you have an oil pump problem, then you resolve the oil pump problem. DO NOT put heavy oil in it. This engine callls for 5W30 with and option for 10W30 in warmer weather, nothing else.

Gauges are like an ex-wife. You don't believe everything they say. Absolutely do NOT put that heavy oil in this. If your main bearings are in any sense still intact you won't be able to effectively get oil through them. You will actually see the same damage on them as you would from an engine that was run without oil.

Your sender could very well be inaccurate. It is not visible with the upper intake in place. You might be able to see it coming up from underneath at the bellhousing but maybe not. A mirror used at the back of the intake and you could see it. Tight spot with the upper intake in place. The way to do this is to thread in a master gauge in place of the sending unit and run the engine to see what your oil pressure actually is. The sending unit itself is a cheap part and not a big deal if it is the issue, but if your oil pressure is actually low you need to find out why fast before the motor blows.
