1996 chevy blazer - removing oil pan? need help Sign In

I need to remove the oil pan. Does anyone know how to remove the oil pan on a 4WD 4.3L V6 96 blazer? The front axle is in the way of dropping the pan. I would greatly appreciate any help you may have.

Thanks

Not a nice job, not nice at all.
The front differential all but has to come out, along with the exhaust Y pipe and anything else that might be in the way.
The flat-rate mechanic’s time guide to do this job is better then six hours. That’s with the use of professional equipment and working the trade on a day too day basis.

I guess it’s not impossible to do in the laneway but you’d better be ready for the long haul.

Do I have to remove the entire front differential? I'm pretty mechanically savy but never done something with the differential. Any good free documentation online for this?

thanks for your help!

According to my manual; no the dif doesn’t have to be completely removed but moved/rolled forward as far as possible, after some of the steering linkage has been removed.
I think all of the service information providers have short term subscriptions available for purchase.

here's the pickle I'm in. I was pulling a trailer up a hill and was running about 4K RPM's. The trailer was probably to heavy to begin with but anyways... After I got to the top of the hill, the water temp started to slowly increase. After I was on flat ground again, when I pushed the gas pedal down it wouldnt go past about 45 mph. I then lost all oil pressure and developed a very bad "sound" in the engine. After the engine cooled down, I found out that the coolant reservoir was bone dry. Sounds like there is metal in the engine just clanging around. I towed the truck home and did some different things.

1.) removed drive belt to eliminate possible water pump, alternator, AC, issues
2.) removed all spark plugs and visually inspected that each piston was moving up and down
3.) also put finger over spark plug hole to make sure there was compression coming out of each cylinder.

All of these things and still have that same bad "sound".

When I start the truck it now has oil pressure and the water temp is normal.

Any ideas on what the sound could be ???

Thanks

Without hearing this noise but reading your story of 4 grand, no coolant and no oil pressure; I’d say that you probably could sign the death certificate on this engine.
If this is the case; don’t waste your time pulling the pan; just be done with it and pull the engine.
Why I say this is because if there is ground up bearings or crankshaft; the filings from whatever has gone wrong in there, will now be throughout the engine’s oiling system. Without a complete disassemble and cleaning and refitting of all components; you’re wasting your time and money.
