1996 cavalier wont start after 2cycle oil dumped in empty tank Sign In

We have a 1996 Chevy Cavalier with 2.2 engine. She is old but was able to drive me to work and back until my daughter run it out of gas. I (her mother) grabbed the can that said "gasoline" but it ended up being 2cycle oil mixed with gas. We have not been able to get it started since. We have tried to put high octane gas it, and sprayed starter fluid and gasoline in the throttle body with no luck. My husband finally got it started one night with gas pedal to the floor. It chugged for over an hour while going through a quarter tank of gas. Went back the next day and nothing, will not start. Fuel pump is working (can hear it start when key is turned on). Changed fuel filter, still no luck. Checked fuses tonight, all good. We are out of options, need some help!!Tongue Any new suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,
Lisa

I seriously doubt one can of 2 cycle gas did all that, especially if you have since diluted it with good gas. I would remove the spark plugs and see what they look like and have the computer codes read as there may be something there to give you a hint of what is going on. If the plugs are dark and fouled, you will have to replace them.

Wet is not OK. They need to be replaced and test the strength of the spark.

I'm sorry, I should have gave more info. He did dry them and clean them with a wire brush, then the guy who normally works on our vehicles also pulled them and they were fine. they also checked the gap and the spark was checked. They had no clue why it still was not starting, and he is a mechanic...lol We are trying to look for new things to try. It was suggested to me by talking with people at work that we try fuel injector cleaner and octane booster. ?????

No, you cannot dry off plug. Cleaning them with a wire brush is about the worst thing you can do to them. They need to be replaced with new Delcos.

You still need to find out what fouled them in the first place. You probably need a scan tool to look at all the sensor data and any stored codes.

The person that works on our cars hooked it up to diagnostics and the code was for a cam sensor, the problem I have with that is that was replaced about 3 yrs ago.

You need to forget about what was replaced years ago. These things can fail the same day or the same week.

we will try the plugs first. The cam sensor was an expensive fix and cost more than the car is worth at this point

I don't know where you get your information. That is an under $200 job. That's peanuts in the scope of normal maintenance for any car. the value of the car isn't a baseline for anything. All cars have a cost to operate, regardless of their value.

Re: 1996 cavalier wont start after 2cycle oil dumped in empty tank Sign In

In addition to the things HT is having you do...... Take the exhaust pipe loose at the manifold & see if it will start..... A few years back one shop I was at was using a real poor brand of induction cleaner.....A few times on older cars this junk plug the cats up so bad they wouldn't start afterwards.....

It's a long shot but if the nuts come off easy, give it a shot, but don't break any studs trying this....That or pull out the upstream O2....
