I bought a 96 Lumina with 60,000 miles on it. A couple of days later, the front drivers side tire decided to come apart while I was doing 70 mph. Thank god it stayed inflated. Anyyway, when the tread parted ways with the tire, it caved in the bottom of the fender quite a bit. While I was checking for any other damage, I noticed a small vacuum line that is now dangling in the space between the inner fender well behind the battery. It doesn't seem to go anywhere and it's too short to reach the wiring harness on the radiator support and even if it was, there is no vacuum line there that I see to connect to. There is a broken connection piece on the end of the line and I'm wondering if there was a canister or something in the fender well that got dejected when the tire blew apart. The inner fender well is plastic and I had to tuck it back into the bent fender after the tire blew because it was rubbing against the treadless tire. The line is connected to a tee coming from another line that runs to the intake. I taped up the end and there is no noticeable difference in how the car runs except when I am in park and step on the gas pedal, (to the floor) it will rev up and stall and rev up and stall like it is cavitating. It doesn't do this when I step on the gas in drive though. Very weird and I'm at a loss. It didn't do this when I bought it so I'm thinking that it has something to do with that line to nowhere. Also, when I'm driving with the AC on, If I step on the gas, the vent shuts off. The AC and blower still work, but the dash vent closes until I back off on the gas. It's definitely loosing vacuum. This also didn't happen when I bought it and only showed up after the tire blow out. I drove the car home a few hundred miles when I bought it. None of these symptoms where there at that time and it was pretty hot out so the AC was on high all the way coming from San Diego into Nevada. I drove another 75 miles to work the next day and the tire blew coming home in the heat. It all seems related. I temporarely pinched the vacuum line under the dash going to the valve that shuts the vents off so I would have a steady flow. Does anyone have any Ideas what this line goes to?

If you have a check engine or 'service engine soon' light illuminated, I'm betting it will be an EVAP code? I agree that you more than likely have a vacuum leak, which will require visual inspection. The EVAP cannisters are usually located low in the RF corner of the engine compartment. Reconnect the vacuum hose that you plugged off and listen for a vacuum leak in that area. If you aren't able to find it, most shops will have a 'smoke machine' that they can connect and find it.

Yes, The vacume line could have been to the charchol canister. Look around and see if You can find a canister. If not, You are probably right. It may have been an accumulator also, this traps and saves reserve vacume for accesorys such as dash vents etc. If at a total loss, Most(most) dealers will have a vacume diagram You can look at or if You're nomaclthcer is gone(the sticker that shows where all vacume lines go under the hood). If it was to the charchol canister I am suprised You have not had an evap code arise. This is a code that says the evaporative system can not pressure correctly and only shows up if the tank is over 3/4 full. if You're tank has not been filled or over 3/4 full it will not do the test. But You're vehicle may just have only a simple vac and draw system that does not alert to a leak.

Will it reach the firewall? Maybe there's a vacuum sensor or MAP on the firewall near the relays if any. Look for broken points where the nipple may have broken off.
