1996 Intermitent warning lights and stalling. Sign In

Greetings To All:

1996 Olds 88, 3.8L with 81,760 miles. Build date 8/95.
Had the crank sensor replaced 2 months ago when car would not start. I used the car twice, about 12 miles, and then it would not start again,
Dis-connected neg cable from battery and then wire packs from ECM, reconnected wire packs and neg battery cable after making sure battery was fully charged.
Plugged in code reader, engine started, had a misfire in cyl 4, which turned out to be the spark plug. Replaced all plugs, no codes, drove about 1 mile, motor sounds excellent.

Next day I started car, "check oil" light stays on,
Shut motor off, restarted with reader attached, this time, "airbag" light stays on. NO codes.
Started motor again with scanner to double check, motor ran about 3 minutes then stalled. NO codes.
I repeated the above one more time, same results, engine stalled in about 2 minutes, NO codes.

Drove the car 3 miles, motor loped a little around corners, but didn't stall, and again NO codes.

The car had started stalling when backing up last year, but never when driving.
Should the ECM be replaced?

Thanks

The stalling finally produced a code, 1406, EGR Pintle Position Circut.

That code has nothing to do with your problems. It's merely an emissions issue, probably carbon built up in the EGR valve.

You might as well put that code reader away for now. It's not going to help you resolve the issues and your just making matters worse by disconnecting the battery all the time. Your just going to have to manually test the spark, injector pulse and fuel pressure during the failure to isolate the direction you need to go.
