1996 Honda Accord, do I need a bypass belt? Sign In

Hi everyone, I've got a question regarding my 1996 Honda Accord. My car has a V6 engine, and as you may know, the engine has 3 separate belts rather than 1 serpentine belt. When I purchased the car (in June, at 132,000 miles) the belt closest to the front of the car (the A/C belt) was completely missing. I had the alternator go out in August and the guy who repaired the car said I should buy a bypass belt and install it where the A/C belt was to keep the engine balanced and extend the car's life. I had a friend who is fairly knowledgeable about cars say that that was a possibility, but when I took the car into the dealership for a different issue, a guy there said the missing belt wasn't really an issue.

So, should I get a bypass belt put in, or will I be fine without it?

Thanks!

A bypass belt only matters when the A/C belt also drives another component which would make it necessary to have the belt. Otherwise, there is no point in installing one.

I agree with HT. You can't put a bypass belt on that one because the ac belt is used to drive the ac compressor only. The balance of the engine isn't determined by what accessories the crankshaft is turning. Having the compressor disabled, cause it is more than likely locked up, isn't going to shorten the life of your engine.

As the guys said and agree if all that belt did was turn the compressor than you can forget it. "Balance of Engine" NO - the car could have been purchased without A/C at all back then. Bet you find outer hub of compressor doesn't turn or pulley real bad. It can just sit there unless you want to part with a lot of $$ for this car,
