1996 Corvette clutch pedal safety switch Sign In

I have a 1996 Corvette 6 speed manual transmission which requires you to depress the clutch pedal to engage the ignition.

Once in the past two weeks (this hasn't happened since), I had symptoms seemingly related to clutch pedal safety switch. After about ten minutes of not a sound turning the key, the car finally started.

I don’t drive the car a lot, but the problem hasn’t happened again since. Does this switch go bad? Is it possible this is not going to happen again?

If the clutch pedal safety switch this is the problem, step by step instructions to replace the switch would be helpful.

Thank you,
Dave

If the problem happens again you can unplug the electrical connector from the clutch pedal and jumper the pins with a paperclip. If the car starts, replace the clutch safety switch. If the problem is still there, you will need to track down the starter circuit.

jumper the pins with a paperclip?

Is a new switch hard to install?

Thanks,

not hard to do at all. But the paperclip test is how you determine if thats the problem. No sense in buying parts you don't need right?

Hello again,

I'm sorry for not making myself clear...

I don't understand what is meant by the term "jumper the pins with a paperclip". Please explain how this is done...is it like jumping a battery with cables?

And the second thing, is a new clutch safey switch for a 1996 Corvette hard to install? Can someone provide instructions to replace one?

Thanks again all,
Dave

Nosing in here:

The idea is to open a paper clip for its wire. Any small similar wire could do. With a two wire plug that is chiefly just an ON/OFF switch or connected/disconnected if put together electrically it would think it's connected and is when jumped. You would do this with the plug unplugged and connectors exposed to jump.

WARNING: In doing this to clutch safety switch the vehicle could start in gear and take off! Make certain it can't and won't do that.

Also: Don't allow bare wire, paper clip or other to touch anything else while testing. This is just a fast test to see if switch is the problem or not. Not sure but it may be adjustable and way off. Will take a "look-see" to know.

Basic idea (generic) looks like this........

That pic hasn't had clip put in other side yet but shows the idea. Use insulated wire if you wish with ends stripped bare to insert in the plug if worried about it touching anything that would blow a fuse or some issue.

"Is this difficult to replace if needed" That's a mute question - it's a Vette - everything is a pill to get at!

This pic from NAPA on-line parts shows what the switch should look like.......

If that's accurate you would jump vehicle's plug not the plug shown that appears clearly has it's own plug to go to car's plug that would have current to one wire and not to the other unless clutch was pushed down hence disabling the starter from cranking engine.

Hey - If or when in doubt don't do stuff until you are sure of what you are doing or get help.

Speaking for myself and no doubt all the regulars here, we have all cut, burnt, bruised ourselves over years of hands on doing work on vehicles Pirate
