1996 Chevorlet Z71/ Vortec 5.7 Liter/ 205,000 miles/ Code P0301
Randomly Comes on. Changed dist. cap and rotor, ignition coil all plugs
and wires and have tried three diff. injection systems Occasionally
truck stumbles on start up. Then runs fine, but with the check engine
light on. Had mechanic do the injection system changes every time. I
get the truck back and it runs fine for 3 - 5 thousand miles then all
of a sudden same problem again. This prob is getting expensive. What
should i do next?

Have you ever had the intake manifold off? They are notorious for intake gasket leaks. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

The Intake manifold would have had to been taken off to replace the spider injection sys. right? That was all done at the mechanic. Three different times now.

The upper manifold would have been removed but you could still have a vacuum leak at the lower.

So a lower intake vacuum leak will throw a cylinder 1 misfire code, and still let the truck run like a spotted a$$ ape. Just with an occasional shake on start up?

Do i have to tear the top end down to check for leaks? Or is there some kind of vacuum tool or reader?

You can have it smoke tested would be the best way to check it but if you spray some carb cleaner all along the gasket with the engine running and listen for engine change, you might find it that way.
