3 speed automatic? When it does this, does it feel like your driving a manual transmission and forgetting to push the clutch in when coming to a stop?

Not uncommon on the 3T40 to have the torque converter clutch to stay engaged while coming to a stop causing the engine to stall out. Usually that was caused by a faulty TCC solenoid. You have to remove the transmission's side cover to get access to the solenoid.

If the cat was clogged, the engine wouldn't have any power when accelerating.

Re: 1995 pontiac sunfire PLEASE HELP Sign In

You won't always get a code. If the solenoid windings are intact the ECM will not realize there is an issue. It isn't magic, it can only read voltage on the solenoid. But working electrically a solenoid can still fail mechanically. If the solenoid were drawing too much power or had an open circuit in its windings, then you would see a code because that is something the ECM can see and realize a fault exists.
