I have been working on a 95 Celica for a friend of mine. It has the 1.8L 4 Cylinder w/ auto transmission.

Recently and suddenly it began idling roughly and stalling when she would stop at a redlight or stop sign, etc, but ran decent when RPMs were up while driving. She had the spark plugs replaced, but it didn't make much difference. She also noted a significant increase in oil consumption... about a quart every other week, with no signs of any leaks of that magnitude.

And then I came along. One of the first things I noticed when I opened the hood was the hose going from the air filter to the throttle body appeared to have been cut and was just laying there... in other words, the car has been sucking in dirty air for God knows how long.

My first course of action was to, of course, replace the hose. I then took apart all of the vacuum lines, EGR valve, etc and cleaned them. I also removed the top cover from the intake manifold and cleaned the inside of it. I cleaned the throttle body and valve, and I sprayed carb cleaner into the hole that leads to the IAC valve. All of the above was absolutely nasty; i.e. when I sprayed carb cleaner into the EGR valve, it would be black and dirty when it came out the other end, and took several sprays to get it clean. I went through two big cans of carb cleaner. Lastly, I replaced the PCV valve and changed the oil (she had gone nearly 9,000 miles without an oil change...ouch!).

After all that, once I got everything back together, it seemed to run just as bad if not worse than it did before.

I removed one of the spark plugs and noticed that they had been fouled (I checked them before I did anything and they were fine). I had assumed that any remaining carb cleaner in the lines and any loose debris may have caused this, so I replaced them all again. Still no difference.

My most recent experiment was to borrow a compression testing kit, and I tested each cylinder thinking it may be a head gasket or bad seals, etc, upon recommendation from a mechanic friend. I did a DRY test (I heard you could use a drip of oil in each cylinder, but I didn't). The results were surprising. The highest reading was around 225 PSI, and each cylinder was within 10 PSI of that. That's fantastic, right?

Also-remember the new spark plugs I had put in THE NIGHT BEFORE?? They are already black and dirty again!

So now I'm stumped, and this is where you come in. Any input would be appreciated. If you have questions I will respond ASAP.

THANKS!!!!!!

Check engine light on?

Has it been checked for codes?
