1995 Mercury Tracer, 1.9 Cranks but won't start Sign In

Hello, I recently replaced my head on m 95 Mercury Tracer 4 cyln 1.9L. New head gasket and intake gasket, new thermostat was purchased a week ago. Now that it is all put back together, car will turn over but won't start. Cam is moving, timing is on, spark in plugs, got fuel, can't figure it out. Car was starting and running after repairs then all of a sudden, stoped starting. Pressure builing up in hose behind thermostat. Took termostat out and boiled it to find out that it is not opening when it should. Took out thermostat and reconnected hose, still building up pressure in hose and not turning over. Please help!!

You mean it cranks but won't start - right? If this builds pressure in a cooling system hose with just cranking engine there has to be a pretty wild leak of compression getting into cooling system. Was head checked by a machine shop for the head gasket job?

Yes, it cranks but won't start. It has not been checked by a machine shop for the head gasket job. I am a little short on funds so my brother, who has been working on cars for over 20 years did it, but we didn't have a torque wrench to tighten down the head bolts. So it is your opinion that there is a compression leak into the cooling system? Could this be due to the head bolts not being torqued enough?

Take the plugs out & run a compression test. See if there is any coolant on any of the plugs..

Shortcuts will sometimes comeback to bite ya.....

Got the car to start! That is a step in the right direction, but the coolant hose is still building pressure. We dont' have a compression checker either. :(

I can understand your lack of funds but you really shouldn't be attempting repairs that your don't have the basic equipment required to do the job. All you can do is make your problems worse as you have just found out. Sounds like the whole job needs to be done over now.

well, we got a torque wrench and tightened that down to specifications, which allowed the car to start. my brother is really good with cars, and so that is why he is doing it. as far as the lack of funds go, it is because I am a single mother with no support from anyone, and so that is why I am trying to do this the way that I am. Feels like you are judging me a little for that.

Nobody is judging anybody. I'm just giving you factual advice that if the job can't be done correctly, it shouldn't be attempted at all. You just make it worse. Your problems aren't gone yet and the head is likely going to have to come off again.
