1995 Chev P/U floods out

I have a 1995 Chev Silverado, 350 Vortec engine, 2 wheel drive, 505,000 KM's. my problem is that it will flood out on start up, driving down the road(stalling), or idling. It does not do this all the time so I can't get catch it in a hard fault with a scanner. All I can get on the scanner is running rich - the scanner is a MAC Tool. I have replaced the O2 sensor, map sensor and the temp sending units when I replaced the rad. Any suggestions?

A maybe is the CTS or ECT = Coolant Temp Sensor or Engine Temp Sensor located right near thermostat. If sending a signal that engine is much colder than it really is or interrupted or wrong signal it could cause flooding. Ohms of the thing should be as in this chart............. The connectors have been troubles on this also. Vacuum leaks in hoses or manifold should be ruled out too. Sensor looks like this - just like a spark plug into coolant........ Usually comes with wires and plug and pic shows black but one should be yellow (I think) - easy test but not conclusive if the thing gets the message to computer to tell it how much fuel to deliver along with other things possible too, T

Seen you say you have a Mac Scanner.. if it's a vortec would it be OBDII??.. Don't know my Chevy's to well lol. If it's OBDII is your scanner capable of getting live data?.

I didn't see "Vortec" listed either for MY 1995, rather TBI for a 5.7. Just maybe a late one snuck thru?? but should be called an "R" code engine if original real Vortec - right? Both use a CTS as only a maybe on things to check, T

Tom is right. No Vortec on 5.7 until 96 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

3 in family! 96,97 +99. Went to the 5.4 in 2000 except for exports! Watch out as those can sneak back in. Wadda I know? Changed one on the 96 for intermittent hard start. Don't even need to drain coolant as it's so high up just makes a small mess. Ah - lost $15 bucks or so and never threw a code. That one I finally caught low fuel pressure and not by much but as we know they want that right! Tom

Besides the rich codes, what is leading you to believe it's flooding out?

I noticed my indash heat gauge was not riding up to where it normally sat after I replaced the rad and both heat sensors. So, I guess that would be the 1st place to try.

Have you checked to see if your fuel pressure holds after turning the key off? Maybe a leaking injector or fuel pressure regulator. -------------------------------------------------------- Your only as good as your tools!

Not only should you check out your coolant temperature sensor, but check to see if you have a stuck O2 sensor. Unplug the O2 sensor and see if the richness goes away. If the richness goes away, the O2 sensor is stuck lean and causing the PCM to add to much fuel. Another possiblity is a MAP sensor problem. Make sure the vacuum line to the MAP has vacuum on it and isn't rotted or broken. Then check the MAP sensor voltage at idle. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
